And So It Begins…

Location: Vancouver airport

This might sound strange, but I honestly didn’t expect to be this relaxed while spending almost six hours sitting around the Vancouver airport. We had an easy time getting here, but then we had to stand in line for almost an hour to check in for our next flight, and I was tired and hungry and grumpy…but then we had a meal, I sent some email and then I watched a few episodes of The Big Bang Theory on my iPod, so harmony is restored. We still have a nine-hour flight to London and another 2.5 hours after that to Stockholm, but I think I’m ready. This is going to be fun.

Getting underway

The Latest on the Lees

Don’t judge me — I finally caved and bought Chris an iPad for his birthday. It was a joint gift from me and both sets of parents, so at least the price was reasonable. He got it on Friday and I’m fairly certain he didn’t put it down for more than an hour the entire weekend. Here’s the best part: now that he has access to all these cool apps, he has finally taken an interest in where we’re going for our cruise. Apparently he didn’t even realize the Kiel Canal is an actual canal with locks and everything. He’s a clueless idiot, but I love him anyway.

This is the first night in over two weeks that I feel almost back to normal. I caught a cold the week before the BBQ that quickly turned into an unbearably painful sinus problem. I had the same problem when we flew back from Rome a couple years ago, and I remember how completely plugged up and utterly miserable I was on that flight, and I couldn’t bear the thought of going off to Sweden like that. So the morning of the relay, I finally went to a doctor and got some antibiotics, and at last I can breathe again.

Speaking of the relay…despite the fact that it poured almost the entire day and I was walking in the rain with a sinus infection, it was a fun experience. Everyone there was in good spirits (some people went right on playing volleyball or whatever despite the weather) and it was all for the kids, so that was a good motivator. I would totally do it again next year. (Never mind that it’s been three days and my shoes are STILL wet…)

We had Brayden’s kindergarten orientation this week — my baby is growing up. He reached a very cool milestone today: he read a word on a sign by sounding it out! He’s been able to sound out the individual letters for quite a while, but he never put it all together until today. Awesome.

And we are only four days away from our big trip! I don’t think it feels quite real yet. I’ve been planning for so long that it just seems like it’ll never actually happen. We’re off to Stockholm on Saturday — how cool is that?

BBQ Bash

Everything worked out beautifully for our neighborhood BBQ this weekend, despite some last-minute glitches (we weren’t able to start setting up until two hours before show time, so it was a mad rush to get tents, tables, chairs, food, drinks, etc. ready in time). Weeks of planning really paid off — the adults all congregated by the tables under the tents while the kids ran amok on the other side of the yard. At one point I think we had over a dozen kids on the trampoline at the same time (plus a few under it, but that’s another story). Everyone seemed to have fun, I got more donations for the Easter Seals relay, and we have so much food left over that I won’t have to cook for at least a few days. Awesome.

Gearing Up for Summer

Life has kicked into high gear around here lately. We’re hosting a neighborhood BBQ this weekend, next weekend is Chris’s birthday and the 24 Hour Relay, and the very next weekend we leave for Stockholm. Exciting stuff!

As the school year winds down, I’ve been busy sorting out what the boys are going to do this summer. Brayden will do the preschool summer camps again, but Justin is too old for those this year, so it’s a bit of a challenge trying to find activities to keep them both occupied. Justin is going to the Easter Seals camp, of course, plus I just signed him up for a science camp at the local college that I think he’ll love. I’m going to try to get him into another science camp (on quantum mechanics…not my thing, but he might enjoy it) in mid-August, and then we’ll just be counting down the days until they go back to school.

And going back to school will be extra special this fall because Brayden will finally start kindergarten! Having both boys at the same school for the same hours seems like a dream. I’ve applied for the full technical communication certificate program, so if I get into that I should be busy with courses for a year or so, and then I’ll start thinking about a career plan. I’m not in a hurry to go to work, but there’s much less of a cachet to being a stay-at-home mom if your kids aren’t actually home for most of the day. So we’ll see how things go.

Adventures in Vancouver

Location: Langley, BC

It was another spectacularly successful day. We munched down the free breakfast at the hotel and then drove to Surrey to catch the SkyTrain downtown. We knew the kids would like the train — Justin was absolutely fascinated by the map of the stations and kept a running count of how many stops were left before we reached our destination. (When we finally got to Science World, Justin looked at a big sign advertising a Da Vinci exhibit and remarked, “Hey, that must be the Mona Lisa.” Which it was, but how he knew that is beyond me.)

Thanks to the fact that we have a membership to the Vernon science centre, we got FREE fast track entry into Science World (which was especially awesome considering how much time we spent standing in line at the aquarium yesterday).  Everywhere you looked there was some sort of giant interactive game demonstrating basic science principles. I’m not even into science, and I thought the place was pretty cool. Brayden had a field day at the special Lego Castle Adventure exhibit, where he got to build his own castle and marvel at life-size models of knights and dragons. We even saw a stage show about electricity, which took me back because it was almost exactly the same show I saw when my parents brought us here over 20 years ago. Wow. So Science World was three hours well spent.

Afterwards Chris took the boys back to the pool, and now we’re chilling in front of the TV before going for dinner. What a great weekend.

On the Road Again…

Location: Langley, BC

We had a few reasons for going to Vancouver this weekend: 1) we wanted to go in March but had to cancel due to bad weather; 2) Chris and I are about to leave the kids for 18 days and we figured we owed them a weekend away; and 3) we still want to get our money’s worth for the science centre membership we bought a couple months ago. So here we are.

Day one was a huge success: a gorgeous drive to Vancouver, three hours at the aquarium, supper at McDonald’s and plenty of time on the hotel waterslide. The kids were awake until 9 and still got up at 6 (sigh) but they did sleep all night, so I guess we can’t complain.

Today we’re planning to take the SkyTrain down to Science World. Stay tuned…

Celebrating Mom

My expectations for Mother’s Day were not that high (Chris wanted me to send him an email outlining exactly what he was supposed to do…sigh) but it turned out to be a pretty nice day. The boys insisted on giving me breakfast in bed, so they made the toast and poured the milk and served it all looking supremely proud. Then they went to Grandma’s house for the morning and Chris and I had time to go for a long walk and enjoy the beautiful weather. Then I had the whole afternoon to myself while he took the boys to the park. And finally, we went to his parent’s’ house for dinner, so I didn’t even have to cook. Ahh…

Words, Words, Words…

The technical writing course I’m taking is supposed to teach me how to take complex information and break it down step by step, using clear, precise language that cannot possibly be misunderstood. The other day it dawned on me that that’s exactly what I have to do with Justin every single day. Detailed written instructions are the best way to get through to him, and since he takes everything so literally, you can’t have any ambiguity. No wonder I’m acing this class. Huh.

One thing that really annoys me about the online courses I’ve taken so far, though, is that no one actually teaches anything. They basically just give us an assignment and set us loose to figure it out for ourselves. (If I knew how to figure it out, I wouldn’t be taking the damn class…but whatever.) What ends up happening, of course, is the students all pool their knowledge and learn from each other, so fine. But that is one overpaid instructor. My last two assignments came back with perfect marks and not a single comment — the grades are nice, but how am I supposed to learn anything from that? Argh.

Busy Little Lees

I’ve often admired how my parents get so involved in their community, whether they’re volunteering at a hockey tournament or giving money to the Red Cross. Chris and I donate money to various causes but we don’t generally do much more — so when a friend of mine asked me to join her team for the 24-hour relay to raise money for the Easter Seals camp (the one that Justin is actually going to this summer), I said sure. It really does feel great to work for a cause I wholeheartedly believe in. I’m becoming completely shameless about asking people for money, but I guess that’s what you have to do. And the relay itself should be fun, unless of course I get the 3 a.m. shift. We’ll see.

Here’s the link where you can donate, if any of my loyal readers are in a giving mood:

Mom and Dad were actually here for a quickie visit last week, during which we found time to play a round of golf, so that was cool. When they were about to leave, Grandma asked Brayden if he was going to miss them, and he matter-of-factly explained that no, he wouldn’t, because they’ll be back in June. Nice.

Speaking of which…less than seven weeks to go until we leave for Europe! I’m sure the time will fly because we’ve got a lot going on between now and then. I’m wrapping up my latest tech writing course, we’re contemplating trying the Vancouver trip again, we’re hosting a neighborhood BBQ and of course I’m doing the relay. Things are hopping. And I like it that way.

Photo Op

These were taken at Boston Pizza the night of Brayden’s birthday. It’s been so long since we did a picture of Mom and the boys that I thought I’d do a special post just for them.

I love the look on Brayden’s face in the close-up. The ketchup really adds to it too.
